STEM Stars!

5 December 2024

Recently, we Conlethians are on quite a run regarding ‘Best in Ireland’ awards! Greta Lawless topped the Irish contingent in the Cyclo-Cross World Cup, First Year Daniel Karas routinely wins All-Ireland fencing golds and our U19 Basketball Boys are taking a big step towards national glory, this very afternoon! But perhaps three of our Third Years have just earned the most prestigious national award of them all: Elodie Wallace, Emilia Aherne and Robyn O’Hanlon took home the ‘Junior Scientists of the Future’ trophy at the National SciFest awards ceremony. Yes, following on from Charlie Plant’s ground-breaking project of last year, our students’ scientific success is, well, mushrooming! The girls’ project involved research into the suitability and environmental value of using building materials made of mycelium. Judging from the enthusiastic reception of this proposal, we may be soon following Alice and settling down onto our mushroom stools. And just in time for Season Two of ‘The Last of Us’. Well done to our Junior Scientists, and our slightly less junior Junior Science teachers: Mr. Cavallero, Mr. Callaghan and Mr. Morris!
