Joachim’s Warm Memories!

12 February 2025

Who remembers Joachim? Though only here for a year, 1990-1991, Joachim de Salazar Delfin left a significant impression on St. Conleth’s College… as we did on him. Joachim spent only Sixth Year with us in 1991-1992… and sat the Leaving Cert at 15-years-old. He even did Irish! No, Joachim was no snowflake! Joachim has many fond memories of his time at St. Conleth’s and was delighted to come back for a visit with his wife and daughter. He was the only Spanish student in the school at the time, which probably explains his accelerated proficiency in English and his quick bonding with School Captain Karl Finnegan and the rest of the Class of 1991. He remembers being well taken care of at No. 28, Clyde Road, and appreciated the warm family atmosphere while he was so young and away from home. Mr. Kelleher even alotted him a privileged position in the Tuck Shop queue, along with girls, naval officers and… well, you know the rest! Joachim was delighted to come back for a visit with his wife and daughter and recognised the old canteen (Junior Infants Room, now). He did not particularly comment on the quality of the food served back then, but we are sure it compared well with his native gastronomy. We hope to see him back for his class’s 35-year reunion and we may even persuade his daughter to follow in her father’s footsteps and join us for a while!
