Darius the…
8 April 2025…Third! Yes, Darius III (not II !) was the particular ”King of Kings’ of the Persian Empire who lost to Alexander the Great at Issos, Gaugamela etc… and tt was one of the few questions, at The Ides of March (and April) Classics Teachers Table Quiz last week, that our leading ‘Olympian’ team of Isobel Solan, Hugo Sweeney, Scott Herbots and Poppy Doyle got wrong: in fact, they were correct on 35 out of 40 classical ‘trivia’ questions but, alas, they were edged out by Tom ‘Xerxes’ Giblin’s returning champion St. Mary’s Drogheda ‘Titans’ who scored a near impossible 37/40. Well done to our Olympians and the whole phalanx of Classics enthusiasts. Our Fifth Year team also finished strongly and it was great to see so many teams from the younger years, whose performances will only get stronger as they mature and move up the ranks. And we are not even done for Classics events for this year: stay tuned… the Young Classicist Symposium is up next!
