An Infinite # of Mathematicians Walk into a Bar…

2 April 2025

…and the first asks for one beer, second for two, third for three and so on. The bartender sighs and pours out 1/12 of an empty glass.

No. We don’t get it, either. But we are sure that the 160 young mathematicians who gathered in Portlaoise for the Irish Maths Teachers’ Association National Finals did! (Not that they spend much time in bars…) Well, our ‘Superfriends’ team of Yubo ‘Widdershins’ Wang, Joe ‘Kaprekar’s Constant’ Kelleher, James ‘Parallelepiped’ Power and Henry ‘Tetrahedron’ Turner did St. Conleth’s proud finishing tied for fourth amidst the field of forty teams. And this is after getting through the regional finals last month, which included hundreds of teams. Well done to the boys on this incredible but quite calculable deed: the historical apex of our Maths Teams’ accomplishments. Captain Yubo has kindly shared some questions below and is willing to walk into a bar with you and go through them… but only after Maths Paper 2 finishes on June 9th!
