A Portrait of the Artist as a TY
20 October 2025Transition Year is, in a sense, ‘a year out’. For some, at times, that seems to be interpreted as ‘a year out… of full consciousness’ as they somnambulate through the school day, traipsing from class to class and activity to activity, wearing a pleasant but dopey smile on their faces. Well, it is an important time for growth, and judging by the amount of ankle being shown under their uniform ‘capris’, the boys in particular are putting a lot of energy into simply getting taller! But most of our TYs are carping their diems, and exploring talents and experiences as extensions to the traditional classroom. Take Alby Crowley, for example. As long ago as his First Year Young Classicist trophy-winnning Odyssey/Peanuts mash-up, we knew this boy had creative talents. Lately, he has been concentrating on photography and film, with his stills of school life feeding our website and Twitter page and his year-long video documentary on TY currently in production.
