2 October 2024Chess is sort of like rugby… at least, in this sense: if you are the best in Leinster, you the best in Ireland, and, maybe, one of the best in the world! Chess is also like rugby in that the full contact training often leads to injuries, especially when you are practising regularly with Joe ‘Killer’ Kelleher. But though our rugby teams are suffering an injury crisis, our Chess Team shook off training niggles to finish a proud Third in the 60+ team St. Andrew”s Chess Tournament. Captain Yubo Wang led the way, going 4-1 on Board One, backed by Joe on Two (4.5 wins) and Zach Waldron (3) and James Power (5) on Boards Three and Four. The team emotionally dedicated their fine finish to the recently departed Mr. Ronan Carvill, a guru of chess… and many other things.
