Daniel Gilligan and Philip O’Hanrahan started the debating season off in style, continuing the Conlethian tradition of winning the UCD Mace. Mr. Carvill and Debating Co-ordinator (and alumnus) Matthew Collins, however, did not rest on their laurels. They then hosted another spectacularly successful edition of the St. Conleth’s Junior Mace (with over 100 participants!) while also establishing a new Conleth’s tradition: Debating and Public Speaking Workshops for primary school students. Somehow, they and the other past-pupil coaches (Conor White, Christopher Costigan and Kevin Roche) also managed prepare and run our various teams through the various competitions, and doing it well enough that we once again have an impressive contingent heading through to the final rounds of the Leinster Schools Junior Debating Competition. The teams of Tomás Clancy/Dylan Browne and Stephen Allen/James Rafferty Hastings, as well as Frank Knowles as an individual, have all ‘made the break’ , in debating parlance and now head down the well-trodden path from St. Conleth’s to Leinster, national and perhaps international glory!
